# Create and Use Tags to Segment Your Contacts in Myna

> Create and apply tags to segment your contacts by lead source, interest, or any other category, then filter your inbox and contact list by tag.

Tags are short labels you attach to contacts to classify and group them. A contact can have any number of tags, and tags make it easy to filter your contact list, identify where leads came from, and target specific groups in your campaigns.

Common uses for tags include marking lead source (e.g., `facebook-ad`, `referral`, `trade-show`), product interest (`solar`, `roofing`, `hvac`), follow-up priority (`hot-lead`, `not-now`), or geographic area (`los-angeles`, `east-bay`).

## Creating a Tag

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Tags settings">
    Navigate to **Settings** → **Tags** in the left sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a new tag">
    Click **Add Tag**, type the tag name, and press **Save**. Tag names are plain text — use hyphens or underscores instead of spaces for consistency (e.g., `web-form` instead of `web form`).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the tag">
    The tag appears in your workspace tag list and is immediately available to assign to any contact.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You can also create tags **inline** while editing a contact or importing contacts — you don't have to go to the Settings page first.

## Applying Tags to a Contact

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the contact">
    Navigate to **Contacts** and click any contact to open the detail view.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the tags section">
    Tags are displayed at the top of the right panel in the Conversations view, or in the contact edit form. Click the **+ Add tag** input.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select or create a tag">
    Start typing to search existing tags. Click a tag from the dropdown to apply it. If you type a name that does not match any existing tag, Myna offers to create it on the spot — click **Create "\[tag name]"** to add it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Remove a tag">
    Click the **×** on any applied tag to remove it from the contact.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Changes to tags on a contact are saved immediately.

## Applying Tags During CSV Import

When bulk-importing contacts from a CSV file, you can apply one or more tags to all contacts in that import batch at once. Select the tags from the **Tags** field in the import dialog before you upload the file.

<Note>
  Tags applied during import are added to every contact in that file. If you need different tags for different groups of contacts, split them into separate import files.
</Note>

## Filtering Contacts by Tag

Use the **Search** bar on the Contacts page to search by tag name. In the Conversations view, you can also filter the inbox list by searching for a tag — any conversation associated with a contact that has that tag will appear in the results.

## Tags from GoHighLevel

If your workspace is connected to GoHighLevel, tags from your GHL location are imported alongside contacts when you run a contact sync. Existing GHL tags are matched to Myna tags by name — if a tag with the same name already exists in Myna, the contact is associated with it; if not, a new tag is created automatically.

<Tip>
  Standardize your tag naming conventions across Myna and GoHighLevel before running a sync. Consistent lowercase, hyphenated names (e.g., `solar-lead`) make it much easier to manage your tag library over time.
</Tip>

## Managing Your Tag Library

From **Settings** → **Tags**, you can:

* **Rename a tag** — Click the tag name to edit it. All contacts associated with the tag are updated automatically.
* **Delete a tag** — Click the delete icon next to a tag. This removes the tag from all contacts in your workspace. This action cannot be undone.

<Warning>
  Deleting a tag removes it from every contact in your workspace immediately. If you are unsure whether a tag is still needed, consider renaming it to an archive name (e.g., `archived-solar-2023`) rather than deleting it.
</Warning>

## Tag Sync with GoHighLevel Workflows

Myna also writes status tags back to GHL contacts as they progress through campaigns. For example, when a contact's status changes to *In Conversation*, Myna adds the tag `myna-status-in conversation` to their GHL record. This keeps your GHL pipeline in sync without any manual work.

See the [GoHighLevel integration guide](/docs/integrations/gohighlevel) for full details on how tag-based automation works in both directions.
